ABM Reflections

This page briefly describes our mission work in Australia and abroad

FUNdraiser for the Bunot Clean Water & Rice Thresher Project.
A Soup Dinner followed by a FUN Bible Quiz Night!

St. Leonard's held a Soup / Quiz Night fundraiser on Saturday 11th September. The evening started at 6.30 pm with a choice of delicious soups (a refillable bowl), bread rolls or garlic bread, cake and tea or coffee to follow. Then the fun began...  a Biblical Quiz with a difference! Many of the questions were surprising... and so were the answers! It was a fun night. There were prizes galore and we raffled a Michael Cartwright pastel, "Riverside Home"

It was also a wonderful opportunity for a really meaningful social and spiritual gathering of the Christian Churches in Denmark. Of  course the main objewctive was to raise momey towards ABM.'s Bunot Clean Water Supply and Rice Thresher Project, and in this we were successful, raising a total of $ 830.

Many thanks to our sponsors, who provided most of the prizes, our cooks who provided the delicious meak, and our supporters.

We continue to support this project. The proceeds from our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Lunch, (8th February), are going towards this cause.

Further details of the project are given below.

Bunot Water Supply and Rice Thresher Project

A recent project we have become involved in is the Bunot Water Supply and Rice Thresher Project. This is through the Australian Board of Missions (ABM).  Bunot, in the Philippines, is a small and remote community presently serviced by small wells along the river bank which account for the high incidence of water-borne diseases. There are also limited opportunities for income generation. The project will address these issues through provision of an adequate water supply and the purchase of a rice thresher. The total cost of the project is around $ 20 000, and we are making the provision of some of this amount our main project for 2004. It will benefit 211 families comprising of about 400 adults and 600 children. Donations are welcome. Email us if you require further information.

Australian Board of Missions (ABM)

In addition to our special project, described above, we give on-going financial support to ABM for their work in Australia and amongst Australia's near neighbours, New Guinea, the Philippines, Melanesia and Polynesia. ABM regards words without actions as hollow; -Mission is the love of Christ in action. ABM supports local Christians working in their own communities and believes that supporting local inititives is the most effective way of attaining their goals.

The Bush Church Aid Society (BCA)

We give financial support to the Bush Church Aid Society in Australia. BCA works in the remotest areas of Australia. They provide community leadership, pastoral and practical care, training and spiritural counsel, camps and hostels for children, mailbag Sunday school, medical flying services, encouragement and the Hope of the Gospel to indigenous people in their own languages and culture. BCA also works with Christians in the detention camps for illegal imigrants.

Church Missionary Society (CMS)

We give financial support to the Church Missionary Society. This is a missionary-sending agency who are committed to making Christ known in all the world. It is an Australian Anglican society, but is open to all denominations who agree with  the objects and principles of the Society. CMS currently has 160 missionaries in 24 countries. Their aim is to see lives transformed by Christ.

Closer to Home

We support welfare work within our town. In particular we work with the Denmark Community Collective and the Denmark Local Drug Action Group to assist the less fortunate in our community. The picture above shows some of the kitchen staff who work to provide an evening meal on a weekly basis. Our hall and facilities are provided free of charge for this event, an inititive of the Community Collective. The recent upgrade of our kitchen, which was a joint inititive of StLeonard's, the Local Drug Action Group and the Collective was in response to the needs of this ongoing service.

Tsunami Disaster Appeal

Along with organisations and people all over the world we have been active in giving support to this cause. It is heartwarming to see the way humanity draws together to give support when disasters of this magnitude occur. Sad though to reflect that it take a disaster to draw us together. See our News and Notices page and, to make cash donations, refer to the suggested donors listed on the Home page.

If you would like to assist in any of the above inititives, or would like more information about them, please contact our Missions Secretary, Robin Dessauer on the email link on the Home Page.
